Alligator / Crocodile - Symbol of Primal Energies & Survival
Alligator/Crocodile's medicine includes maternal protection, primal energies, connection to mother earth, protection from manipulation, understanding deceit, revenge through patience, initiation, understanding weather, access to ancient knowledge, power to survive. The Alligator/Crocodile has inhabited earth for millions of years. They bare the unstoppable, untamable creative forces of All That Is, the force and fury of primal energies. They symbolize creation and destruction and are the keepers and protectors of all knowledge. In many a myth and legend crocs/alligators are known as the keepers of ancient wisdom. When one of these creatures enters your life, look for an opportunity to touch very primal energies. There will be an opportunity for new knowledge and wisdom. Concealing themselves in mud and water, the alligator/crocodile will wait patiently for unsuspecting prey to come by and quickly snap it up! They eat any animal they can get their snappers on, and if unable to swallow it whole, will tear it into bite size pieces. YUM! In spite of this, they don’t eat unnecessarily. Waste is not a part of their medicine. If this is your power animal, be mindful over what you consume. Don’t over eat, or under eat either. Listen to your body telling you when you are full or not. Digestive problems are not uncommon among those with this power animal. The alligator/croc digests its food slowly, and so must you remember to gather, absorb and digest all experiences thoroughly before moving on too quick. The alligators/crocodiles eyes located high upon their heads, giving them the ability to stay pretty much hidden below water yet still see above it. Symbolically this suggests clairvoyant abilities. From these creatures we can learn how to be patient and appropriate timing, for the alligator/croc knows when to hide below the water, when to peak above it, or take action and snap. For croc/alligator people caring for the eyes is important. Concealing themselves in the water links the croc/alligator to the emotional body of man. They contain the lesson of discovering and letting go of emotions hidden below the surface. In the wet season when water is high, the alligators/crocodiles dig deep burrows that in the dry season are wet alcoves to which they retreat. As well as this, the alcoves act as reservoirs from which other animals drink. Water is the giver, the blood, the nectar of life, and though the alligator/crocodiles may be regarded as fearless and fierce by most, the sharing of these reservoirs shows that the alligator/croc respects all life forms. The alligator/croc is all about survival, an adult has no known predators apart from another adult or humans. Young alligators have many enemies. Dangers begin for them even before they hatch. E.g. animals such as raccoons and skunks steal and eat the eggs of American alligators. They wait for the mum to leave the nest to swim or feed, quickly raiding the nest. A hatch-ling faces many dangers. Foxes, bears, snakes, and birds of prey may snatch them up for a tasty meal. Young alligators may even have to be on the lookout for larger alligators. If alligator/croc appears in your life or when dreaming the message for you may be to look after you and secure your basic survival needs. Alligators/crocodiles are some of the best parents in the reptile world. A female alligator builds a nest on the ground, and although she doesn’t sit on the eggs, she’s is on guard at the nest and help the eggs hatch. Sometimes both parents look after and protect the young. Around 9 weeks after laying the eggs, a chirping sounds come from the nest - the babies are hatching! Whether males or females hatch depends on the temperature of the nest. If a nest is warm, males hatch. If a nest is cool, females. If the temperature is in between, both males and females hatch. Upon hearing the chirping, the mother uncovers the eggs. she picks up the babies and carries them to the water. If there are any un-hatched eggs she will roll them in her mouth till the shell cracks to help the babies hatch. They are around 23 cm long and are able to swim and catch food right away. However they do still need protection, so stay close to her. They may even bask on her head or back. If in danger, the hatch-ling cries out bringing the mother right away. Hatch-lings sometimes stay with their mothers for a year or more. Alligators/crocs come together only to reproduce and have distinct individual personalities. Those with this power animal are generally loners and only come together in groups if they absolutely have to. However, they can also make great leaders as they know how to survive in any situation and are strong enough to hold their own. There is also the opportunity to develop new wisdom but they must be careful not to be consumed by this wisdom. Each piece of knowledge must be examined before moving onto the next. Breathing techniques like those practiced in yoga are beneficial.

Ant - Symbol of Team Work, Oneness & Patience
When observing ants it is easy to see some of the special characteristics, or 'powers' they have. Ants are very industrious. There are ants that are solitary but most are part of a large community. Within the community there is a wide variety of activities and behaviors, with each ant knowing its place and fulfilling its duties with total loyalty to the whole. Each ant does his bit to ensure the survival of the whole community, no matter what role it has in society. Activities include gathering and hunting. They work hard, are patient and co-operative. An ant is able to carry a leaf, a crumb or a dead ant for miles - just to get back home to the anthill, requiring a load of stamina and patience. If an ant has to fight, it will, if an ant has to dig tunnels, it will, and if an ant has to carry leaves for miles, it will, all for the good of the community. As well as being extremely hard working they possess an extraordinary ability to work as a team - the power of their medicine - to build their homes, to feed and protect all members of their colony. There may be a social order in ant colonies, but all ants honor and respect each other and work toward their common goal - the good of the community. Worker ants are great architects and can show us how to construct our dreams into reality. They are also very persistent and can teach this skill as well. Queen ants have wings and are able to fly until they fall pregnant. Once pregnant they tear of their own wings sacrificing the ability to fly for the birth of a newborn. If the ant has crossed your path then this may be an indication that you are hardworking, good at team work, working to help the community, or that you are patient and take the time needed to achieve your goals. Being tireless workers and hunters, ant teaches us the trait of perseverance and patience in ALL they/we do. These gifts can also be utilized by us. Those who have Ant as Power Animal, will find that many of their life lessons will involve the mastery of patience in some way. Ant medicine is powerful, yet subtle. It teaches us how to let go of our egos, aligning us with the uprightness of equality. For sure the world would be a happier place if humanity held and utilized the virtues of ants. Imagine what the world would be like if humanity held and applied the values that the ant expresses. Hard work and patience, which come with the power of the ant, make goals and dreams a reality. If any of the above seems like your weak points, this may indicate that you need to work on this. Perhaps you need to practice the special qualities an ant possesses - co-operating, working with others or patiently working towards your goals. If you intentionally murder or maim an ant e.g. by stepping on it, question yourself why it is that you are deciding to destroy the unconditional love that the ant so freely gives and shares.

Armadillo - Symbol of Boundaries & Safety
Armadillo's medicine includes - understanding your personal boundaries, respecting the boundaries of others, carrying your protection with you at all times, understanding your vulnerabilities, empathy, discrimination, medicine shield safety, being grounded. To defend itself, the armadillo will roll itself into a ball, becoming completely armored against attack. This teaches us how to consciously define our own emotional and physical boundaries. Armadillo wears its armor on its back, its medicine is this part of its body. Its boundaries of safety are a part of its whole being. Adjust your rhythms and senses to know what is safe and what is not. Armadillo teaches you how to protect yourself and when to let your defenses down, to let others in to your space. You can make yourself an energy body shield using Armadillo medicine. Draw a circle on a piece of paper and view it as a medicine shield. In the circle write down all the things that you want to have, experience, and those things that bring you joy. This shield reflects who you are and what you will be on an unconscious level. When you Armadillo comes into your life, it is time to define your space. You may have difficulty saying 'no' and are being taken for granted. You must learn to guard your personal space and allow entry only when you want.

Badger - Symbol of Aggression & Self-Expression
Badger symbolizes aggressiveness, reliance, self-expression, holding one’s own, link to the underworld and the magic and mystery of creation, link to plant and animal spirits, fearlessness, boldness, braveness The power of the badger lies in is its aggressiveness and the readiness to fight for what it wants. On the flip side, the badger is also about healing - they are the keeper of Earth's healing herbs. Badger will persevere in finding a cure. People with this power animal are often healers and have the guts to use unconventional methods. Badgers are a member of the weasel family. They grow 2-3 feet long are around 12 inches high. As they have poor eyesight, family members often mark one another with scent. However, their sense of hearing and smell are excellent. Those with this power animal could do well in jobs that use sound as a healing tool. You may also need to develop clear sight, psychically and physically and not only depend on your other senses for survival.

People with this power animal also usually :
* are leaders and bosses and will get the job done. * quick to express their feelings with concern for the consequences. * likely to be solitary but comfortable and happy with themselves and their own company. * are self-reliant

When used correctly, this is a powerful power animal to have on your side! The badger is very domesticated - they keep their dens very clean and neat, replacing their bedding frequently, going backwards into their dens dragging the straw so they don’t make a mess. Badger bestows on you the gift of organisation and neatness. If they have entered your life then maybe you should focus on being orderly and neat in your daily life. You may also be shown how to handle your time better. Badgers are very compact and well-muscled, but they have loose skin which on the surface gives the a misleading look linking them to illusion. As the age old saying goes - what you see is not always what you get…. They have mightily strong jaws which symbolizes verbal prejudice. Words can be like a double sided sword, negative or positive - sharp, harsh, cutting, crushing or the pole opposites - soft, encouraging, kind, gentle, uplifting…. Badger people can do either or. They are fearless and fierce and if driven into a corner badgers will go at it tooth and nail and fight to the death! Very unsociable badgers are, so those with this medicine may find it hard relating to others, sneering at authority and holding their own in any given situation. One of their biggest tests would be being able to express themselves clearly. Being amazing diggers, badgers are able to get below ground with no difficulty, linking them to the underworld. This is where the mysteries and magic of life and creation is held. Also, this is symbolic of a powerful link to animal and plant spirits, and can show badger people how to get in balance and alignment with above and below ground.

Bat - Symbol of Rebirth
Bat's wisdom includes shamanic death and rebirth, initiation, viewing past lives, pollination of new ideas, transition, understanding grief, the use of vibrational sound, camouflage, invisibility, ability to observe unseen, and secrets. Shaman initiates go through a ritual death, sometimes with the aid of teacher plants and/or fasting. Here they confront their fears and are reborn without their old identities. Bats help us to release fear and patterns which no longer fits within our pattern of growth. Bat flying into your life signifies that transformation of the ego self is about to occur, the end of a way of life and the start of another. This transition can be very frightening for many, even just to think about. But you will not grow spiritually until you let go these old parts of you that are NOT NEEDED. Facing the darkness before you will help you find the light in rebirth. The bat gives you the wisdom required to make the appropriate changes for the birthing of your new identity. Bats have needle like teeth and can sometimes be rabies carriers, an infectious disease of the blood. It can cause a person to go mad. Fears that are permitted to spread, unchecked will in the end saturate our system, and can create a kind of madness within our lives. Bats reflect the need to face up to our fears. There are various species of bat, with widely diverse traits. There are small and large bats. With a couple of exceptions, large bats live on fruit and get around visually. Smaller bats mainly feed on insects, catching them on the wing using echolocation. This is where an animal makes sounds and listens for the echoes reflected from surfaces and objects in the environment. With their amazing auditory perception bats are able to navigate through the dark with great ease. They have built in sonar’s, which give them the ability to know what lies beneath the surface. Generally those with this power animal have uncanny abilities to discern hidden messages both from people and the environment. When one has mastered this medicine, intuitive and clairaudient abilities are accurate. Studies have been carried out on bats such as being put in a fridge. When this happens they immediately go into a hibernation mode. When taken back out and warmed up they are totally unharmed, unique for a warm blooded mammal. This shows that the bats life force is strong, and it regenerates it when needed. If this is your power animal, you would benefit from all types of yogic practices, especially those to do with awakening the Kundalini. Bat are extremely adaptable. All that has to do with them from their senses, feeding, flight and mating to size is perfectly matched to their particular environment. The message for you here may be to assess your surroundings to see what bounty is there for you for the taking and then adapting/changing patterns so you can receive it. Unbalanced bats will get ‘scrambled’ and perplexed, flying into things. Are you coming up against obstacles as you try and get what you need and want in life? If so the message for you here may be for you to take a step back to re-gain your bearings and decide the importance of what you are seeking. Bats are sociable animals which can indicate a need for more sociability or increased opportunity with greater numbers of people.

Bear - Symbol of Strength, Introspection, Knowledge, Dream Time & Transformation
Some anthropologists say that the Bear was one of the first animals to be revered by humans. Celtic tradition holds that the Primal Mother is the Bear goddess Artio, a fierce protector. Bear is also associated with the Goddess Artemis. Bear has been a figure in the forefront of many Native cultures. Beliefs state that the power of the Great Spirit lives through the bear, therefore making them highly sought after guides due to their fearless medicine. This belief led to a constellation to be named after it, Ursus Major, The Great Bear. Some traditions see Bear as the spirit keeper of the West, where harvests are abundant and maturity resides. Those who walk or live in areas where bears reside know -or may quickly learn- that the most dangerous animal in the woods is a bear mother protecting her cubs. If you have bear as power animal, you will most probably be quieter during the winter months, which is similar to the bear hibernating during the winter. But in the spring you must awaken to seek whatever opportunities arise. Be fearless in standing up for what you believe in. You are also encouraged to use your abilities as a natural healer. Bear is linked to trees, considered to be natural antennas, joining the heavens and the Earth. Bear also has ties to the seven color rays of the Universal Light, as well as Lunar associations, linking the conscious and subconscious mind. Hibernating during the cold winter months, means bears know instinctively when the time is right and where to go. They also know when to wake back up. From this we can see it is good to know and realize that we sometimes need to be alone, to ponder and reflect, to examine our thoughts and emotions, where we are headed on our life journey. We need to trust and follow our instincts. Bear is active day and night, not like other animals, symbolizing his connection with solar energy, strength and power, lunar energy and intuition. This enhances and teaches us how to develop these qualities within ourselves. Bear medicine teaches us introspection, aiding us to digest our experiences and to discover that we have within ourselves the answers to all our questions. We all have bags of wisdom, if only we slow down and listen to what our intuition, our inner knowing voice is telling us. It is useful to be with yourself at times, so you can be yourself and are able to uncover your own answers to whatever challenge you are facing. On the other hand, just like Bear you need to know when to come out of 'hibernation' and to interact with others. The female bear gives birth to the cubs while asleep. Due to this Bear is regarded as a symbol of the deepest inner wisdom, of the dream time and transformation. When giving ourselves over to sleep we become receptive to the Great Mother who nurtures us. As we delve deep into our identities and lose our egos, going back to our primal and elemental natures, we find we are part of Infinity and of All That Is/The Universe/One. Winter symbolizes darkness, death, and the inner world. Winter is a time of year which many humans fear. Much as they fear death. Yet an intrinsic part of the beauty of Bear, is its connection to the pattern of the stars during this season. The Druids associated the Pole Star of the constellation of the Great Bear, to King Arthur (whose name means Bear). During the Winter Solstice, the darkest night, the Pole Star guides us. Thus, when our world appears negative, dark and confused, when our physical senses and reason and logic seem to fail us, when it feels there is no path to follow, we go with-in to discover our deepest resources, and the light of inner knowing and intuition aids us in finding our way home. Sometimes bears are over confident and to quick to act on their fiery anger. Although possessing perhaps just a trace of fear they can forget caution, an important characteristic to own. If bear is you guide try not to forget caution. If you are unaware, or even disregard your limits, this can have consequences you may not want! If Bear crosses your path, pay attention to how you think, act and interact. Use discernment in everything you do and say, discriminate with care. You are shown how to make decisions from a place of power.

Beaver - Symbol of Group Mind, Master Creator & Builder
Beaver's medicine brings you the wisdom of creativity, maintaining the ability to be productive in all ways by not limiting your options, being persistent, using available resources, finding and using alternate ways of doing tasks, master builder of all things, not damming the flow of experiences in life, achievement through completion of tasks, understanding the dynamics of group work, protecting, cooperation, fertility and new promise. Beavers are good at teamwork and work together cooperatively to construct their homes. From beaver we can learn that we can create and make things a reality most effectively and powerfully when all involved appreciate every individual’s talents, and work together harmoniously. I’m sure most of you will have had many grand ideas, and for most of you the getting idea part is easy, but the problems have begun only when you have thought about actualizing these into physical reality…and then the ideas have faded, just like dreams often fade when one wakes up. This is where you will find beavers medicine to be of great assistance. The beaver is one of the leading creators in the animal kingdom. They get an idea of what their home and also dam should be like, then fell trees with their sharp teeth and build intricate structures with several entrances and exits. The many entrances and exits signify the importance of pliability when in the process of creation. Often when we imagine something we'd like to materialize in physical reality, we focus only on this vision. By doing this we forget that creativity doesn't finish, but begins with the vision, and that in the course of making something real we too change and grow. Often improvements are thought up whilst making a dream/vision reality. If you push these thoughts aside, you may find yourself stuck mid creation. Instead, bear these thoughts in mind and if you find it an improvement restructure your design accordingly, as the end product may be more awesome than you ever dreamed possible. Another lesson to be learned is that beavers possess a gift humans often lack - they use teamwork and cooperation to build their homes. Some refer to this as a group mind, a harmonious balance of communication and purpose, possible only when individual egos aren't meddling with it. A group mind is extremely close to the spirit of Oneness, reminding us that we all come from the same source, and that each individual in the world - no matter what species - is a unique expressions of the original creative energy. This does not mean an individual doesn't have contributions to make to a project, but working together in this way means appreciating that the coming together of minds creates a unification that for many creations is far more effective than individual efforts. The Beaver reminds us that we have to act on our dreams to bring them alive - it is time for action. If beaver has entered your life, it may be wise to ask yourself whether you have been neglecting your dreams? Are you lost in your dreams and not acting upon them? As before mentioned, beavers are expert builders. Their dams are built extremely strong and secure. If beaver has entered your life, you are being asked to strengthen the foundation on which you stand or to build a new one. If you continue to stand on old foundations, new opportunities may be missed. This is also linked to letting go of old, narrowing belief systems and allowing for refreshing change and new adventures. Because of their expertise, the building skills of beavers have been linked to ancient masonry. Often, people with this power animal have past lives associated with this magical art. Studying masonry can uncover deeper, hidden but not forgotten, insights about who you are and who you have been. Beavers are master engineers and transform environments. Their dams consist of wood held together with mud and leaves. Streams are changed into lakes with their dams. When they vacate an area, the dam gradually decomposes leaving a fertile meadow where the lake was. As well as working in harmony with each other, the beaver also knows how to work in harmony with the environment and can show us how to do the same. The large incisor teeth of the beaver are the most distinguishable feature - very symbolic. People with healthy incisor teeth usually have a balanced inner nature, obviously if unhealthy an unsettled inner nature is frequent. If Beaver is your power animal, do not neglect your teeth. Also, if don’t already have it, you need to develop a sense of inner peace. Meditation and quiet contemplation are useful tools to achieve this. Beavers are also fabulous swimmers, and can stay under water for up to15 minutes. They are good at controlling their breathing. If this is your power animal, yoga would suit you well, and any other breathing exercises. Beaver people often find they must work hard to fulfill their goals. Don’t forget to be kind and loving to yourself.

Black Panther - Symbol of Astral Travel, Feminine Energy, Death & Rebirth
Black Panther's Power Includes astral travel, guardian energy, symbol of the feminine, death and rebirth, understanding of death, reclaiming ones power, ability to know the dark, aggressiveness and power without solar influence, reclaiming Power. The Panther is a very ancient and powerful spirit guide. Their power is lunar (moon). In Egyptian rites a panther tail was worn around the neck or waist to help protect and strengthen the individual. Panther has been a symbol of the "Argos of a Thousand Eyes," who protected the heifer IO whom Zeus loved. After his death, the eyes were moved to the feathers of the peacock. The name panther is frequently linked with a certain species of leopard or jaguar and sometimes the cougar. Black panthers are smaller but more fierce than lions and tigers. They are also brilliant swimmers and agile climbers. Because they have the ability to sprint with great speed, they hold the teachings of quick decisive action. Panthers are not the best long distant runners though, so those with this power animal should take part in movement therapies that improve endurance, e.g. swimming, martial arts. It is necessary to learn how to pace oneself, to not push to fast or hard on any one task. Panthers are generally loners, extremely comfortable with themselves and are often drawn to other solitary people. Women with Panther, Leopard or Jaguar power animals frequently find themselves raising their children alone, whether it be through divorce or circumstance. People with this power animal can develop clairaudience, the ability to hear communications from other forms of life or dimensions. They must trust their thoughts and inner voice/visions as they are based in reality. This is an animal guide to assist you on your path, sometimes in the form of a real person such a mentor or teacher. The Black Panther is endowed with great magic and power, which will increasingly be experienced. Panthers have over 400 voluntary muscles that can be used at will when required. Panthers are able to move gracefully in and out of situations, as well as freeze and not be noticed. This is a symbol of the ability to shapeshift realities, using all parts of the body to perform a task. The gift of Panther is the power of silence. They are near silent when hunting or stalking prey, and know when to make themselves seen and when to become unseen. Panther holds the secrets of worlds that are unseen and are associated with lunar energies. Within the darkness of night resides the truth of creation. Black panthers have great mysticism associated with them. They represent the life and power of the night. They can show us how to welcome the darkness and rouse the light within it. Those with this power animal contain knowledge of a galactic origin, and have a responsibility to look after and respect this knowledge. Caution must be used when sharing it with others. When the student is ready the teacher appears, and vice versa. If the student isn't ripe the information given could trigger negative consequences. Panthers possess acute sensitivity. The hairs that cover their lithe bodies, especially on the face, pick up subtle vibrations. This is symbolic for those with this guide. It is an indication of a need to pay attention to their feelings and honor the messages those feelings transmit. Touch can be a significant path to explore to awaken ones concealed gifts. The black panthers sleek, smooth and sensual coat has been linked to sexuality. If panther comes into your life it may be asking you to resolve old sexual issues, or to embrace your sexuality fully. When experiencing the presence of panther, one of their most striking features is their unblinking stare. It seems to see right through the body. Those with panther medicine can use their eyes as a healing tool and have the potential to heal on a cellular level. Panther is a powerful guide to have, always bringing a guardian energy to those to whom it comes.

Buffalo/Bison - Symbol of Abundance
“Rumbling like thunder o'er the prairie,
Great herds of abundance, sharing with man,
I need your knowledge to meet life's challenges,
To survive and move on with my plans. “

Buffalo/Bison's medicine includes manifestation, protection, earth creativity, feminine courage, abundance, knowledge, generosity, hospitality, sharing work, courage, strength, challenge, survival, giving for the greater good, formulating beneficial plans. Those with buffalo as power animal must walk a sacred path, honoring every walk of life. Buffalo will assist you in establishing a deep connection with Mother Earth and Father Sky. and will ask that you help the endangered species in the world. Pray/meditate/focus on harmony and peace amongst all beings. Ask the universe for help, and be thankful for the gifts brought to you. Don’t be forceful or pushy, follow the easiest path. Buffalo will bestow you with strength of character and a free independent spirit. Buffalo teaches us that true prosperity comes when we are grateful for what we have and when we live in harmony and love with every body and being contained within the universe. You will live like buffalo when you know that abundance is present and when ALL relations are honored and known as sacred, when you express gratitude for all parts, all aspects of creation. The story of the White Buffalo Woman originates from the Lakota people, she taught them that all things are inter connected and that it is not necessary to struggle to have abundance. The one thing that is necessary, however, is to be connected with Spirit. Buffalo's relationship to the Native American People of the USA highlights these lessons. Every part of this animal was used, right down to the hooves, which were used to make glue. Buffalo gave others the gift of life by sacrificing its own. Food and hides for clothing and shelter were provided. Prior to a buffalo hunt, prayers of gratitude were offered up to great spirit by the tribes. Post hunt, ceremonies were performed that honored the buffalo's spirit. Without the buffalo these tribes would not have survived the harsh winters. This is just one lesson of abundance - use whatever resources are available. On a deeper level, one must appreciate what one already has. How often do you focus on what is lacking in your life rather than counting your blessings? How much richer are our lives when we are truly thankful MEANINGFULLY for what we have? This sends out a powerful message to the universe. Our beliefs and attitude towards our connectedness to every thing, and also sends out powerful messages to the universe. When we realize that we are all part of a One, each individually unique, each absolutely necessary for the whole, but a drop in the ocean, we will realize that abundance - which refers not only to health, happiness, friendships, and much more - does not have to come from our individual striving. Once we are open to receive, miracles can come from the most unexpected sources. Buffalo shows us how to stop focusing on problems and how to instead concentrate on how much we have and on how rich we are in terms of our connectedness to every thing. Buffalo have large heads that symbolize intelligence of a higher order, their strong bodies ground them to the earth. They are the uniting force between things earthly and un-earthly. Both the male and female buffalo possess horns and humped shoulders. In humans, the shoulders store our personal energy which expresses itself through our hands. Anything we physically touch or hold on to is linked to our personal energy. Shoulders bear responsibility as well as positive or negative emotions. Whatever is felt inside is projected to the outside. I’m sure you are familiar with the saying, and maybe have even said it yourselves - ‘I feel like I’m carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.’ There is often truth in old sayings… buffalo will show you how to free yourself from your burdens by focusing your energy in a balanced way. The horns grow toward the sky, hinting at a connection with a higher intelligence. Humps are often symbolic of stored energy kept within the body. When protecting themselves against danger, the females will form a defensive circle around the calves, and the males will form a circle around the cows. This symbolizes the buffalo's mutual respect for all, their communal family sense, and their natural instinct to protect, defend and honor life. When provoked, the buffalo can be unpredictable and dangerous. Buffalo people need to be reminded to see the good in all things and not to let their frustration store up inside of them. Tai Chi or martial arts would be beneficial on a daily basis to let of steam, de-stress, maintain balance, find focus and peace of mind.

Bumblebee - Symbol of Community, Sun & Personal Power

The ancient Druids saw the bee as symbolizing the sun, the Goddess, celebration, and community. At festivals, mead was usually drunk - the main ingredient of which is fermented honey. In later Christian times, monks lived in beehive-shaped huts, which represented the aim of a harmonious community - whether it included oneself and Spirit or others as well. Bumblebees usually have fewer individuals in their colonies and store less honey compared with the honeybee. Bumblebees are one of few insects that have the ability to control their body temperature. The queen bee and her workers can shiver their flight muscles to warm themselves in cold weather. This allows them to fly and work at lower temperatures than most other insects. They are also kept warm by their large size and hairy coat. Some yogi masters are able to slow their heartbeat and adjust their body temperatures when in an altered state. This ability is associated to the ancient initiations of mastering the body, mind and spirit. Those with this power animal more often than not have strong past life connections to the ancient secrets of longevity and can benefit from yoga. They also make good hypnotherapists. ALL bees are productive, they stay focused on whatever they are doing and do not get sidetracked from their goal. Their legs are one of their most sensitive organs- they actually use them to taste. We are being reminded by the bee to slow down, to smell the flowers and taste the sweet nectar of life. Those with this power animal may have hypoglycemia and diabetes. Hence, regular exercise and good nutrition is advisable. The bumblebee is a highly important pollinator of many plants, they hold the power of service. When landing upon a flower to collect its nectar, pollen also attaches itself to the leg. This is then passed on to other flowers, creating a fertilization process. Their movement from one plant to plant represents the interconnectedness of all living things. The bumblebee is a messenger bringing the secrets of life and service. If this is your power animal and your energy is scattered, the bumblebee can show you how to become focused once more. If you are stung, the message here is - WAKE UP and follow the rhythm of your own heartbeat. Listen to your true self, your higher self. Heed your inner voice and wisdom. If bumblebee finds you, you must follow its lead. If you do this you will come to the destination most suited for your new life awakening.

Butterfly - Symbol of Change, The Soul, Creativity, Freedom, Joy & Color
Native Americans see the butterfly as a symbol of joy. Feeding on the flowers they help pollinate, they further spread beauty. Butterflies eyes consist of thousands of individual lenses. This gives them the gift of being able to see a single image clearly. They can perceive ultraviolet wavelengths of light, suggesting clairvoyant abilities for those with Butterfly as power animal. The antennae of the butterfly has small knobs on each end which are said to aid orientation. If an antenna is missing the butterfly will fly in circles unable to find its way. If butterfly is your ally you need to remain consciously connected to spirit at all times so you may fulfill your goals. Butterfly is the symbol of change, the soul, creativity, freedom, joy and color. Their power is transformation, shape shifting and soul evolution. They represent the element of air, quickly changing and always on the move gracefully. Butterflies are messengers of the moment and come in a wide array of colors. Studying these colors can help you uncover butterflies message to you. It reminds us not to take things too seriously and to get up and move. They teach us that growth and transformation does not have to be a traumatic experience. It can be joyous. Butterflies possess the ability to grow and change, leaving the safety of their cocoon to discover a new world in a new form without fear, trusting their untested wings to fly without a doubt in their minds. They work through many important stages to become the beautiful creature they are. Similar to the butterfly, we too are always moving through different stages, each equally as vital. It is no good rushing to a particular stage, nor is it good getting stuck at a stage and becoming stagnant. Butterfly is a potent symbol for those considering, or in the throes of, a big change. Butterfly is also one of the most inspiring symbols of the animal world, knowing precisely the time to leave the comfort and limitation of its cocoon, flying freely into the world. Quite frequently, we are not so certain. The cocoon of our thoughts and fears may be limiting, they are also safe and familiar. We can become afraid of what may be outside of our limiting thoughts and belief systems, trapping us and holding us back from ourselves, from our dreams and desires, from our unlimited potential.  We can learn how to move on, how to grow from and improve a situation by finding out which stage we are at. This may be the egg stage, the beginning - where an idea is born and not yet reality. The larvae stage is when you physically get your idea going, usually involving preparation such as planning. The cocoon stage entails developing your ideas, project or talent. The ultimate stage of transformation is coming out of the chrysalis, the birth of the butterfly. This last stage is about sharing the colors and ecstasy of your creation with the rest of the world. Remember that we are always evolving, growing and that we are always at one of these stages. Figure out which stage you are at, whether you need more time to complete one stage before being ready going on to the next. Be careful not to rush, nor get stuck either. Not all change feels deliberate; it can be very subtle, such as losing a job and then circumstances pushing you in to a new direction. There may have been things going on within you, getting you ready for a change subconsciously, that you didn't even recognize. If you are feeling insecure and unsure of what is going on in your life right now, then look back over what has been going on in your life recently or even long ago. Have you ever wished that you had a different job? Of changing career? Are you able to see that on some level your wishes are coming true? I’m sure you will remember the good old saying 'be careful what you wish for..' What you focus on, is sure to manifest. Butterfly can help you see that exiting the cocoon suddenly opens a new door, that there is power in trust and vulnerability. No more than you does a butterfly know whether it can fly, but it opens its wings in perfect confidence, and discovers that their delicacy allow its graceful flight, its dance in the air. When we understand that transformation can be as natural as breathing, when we take ourselves lightly, when we trust in our own untried wings to support us, we learn the message of Butterfly, life itself is a joyous dance. Dance brings us the sweetness of life. The four stages of the butterflies growth are parallel to the development of our first forming a thought to manifesting it in the outer world. Understanding that change can be as natural as breathing. We mustn't be so hard on ourselves, trusting that our own untried wings will bear our weight. This is when we receive the Butterflies gift: life itself is extraordinary and amazing. If Butterfly has found you, take note of the most important issues in your life and see what needs to be changed. If an eco-system becomes damaged, butterfly is usually first to leave, as they are highly sensitive to the harmony of the earth. If butterfly finds you and is unwell, hurt or caught, this is an indication that you must stop disturbing the natural design of life and to flow with events in a more gentle and natural manner.

Cat - Symbol of Wholeness, Independence, Curiosity, Many Lives, Cleverness, Love, Mystery & Magic
In Egypt cats were treated like royalty and were always given special privileges. The Egyptian Goddess Bastet takes the form of a cat. Due to their x-ray vision, acute hearing and high intelligence they were used throughout history as guardians and protectors. In ancient Egypt, cats guarded the temple gates and were used to fend off evil. In Scandinavia the cat was used to represent fertility. The cat is associated with the Norse Goddess of Fertility Freya, and the Hindu Goddess of Childbirth, Shasthi. It is also a symbol of childbirth in India. Witches, in days long gone, were believed to have the ability to shape shift into cats. It was also believed that cats were their familiars. Cats are extremely independent and combine a high degree of sensuality with a deeply psychic and spiritual nature. It is impossible to own a cat. They may allow you to take care of them and give them love, but only on their terms. Cats come and go as and when they wish to. Cat's medicine includes independence, unpredictability, healing, curiosity, many lives, magic, mystery, cleverness, the ability to fight when cornered, seeing the unseen, allows us to dream its dreams and protection. Love is represented by the cat. Cats have more rods in the retinas of their eyes which enable them to see very well in the dark. Darkness is often associated with mankind's fears. Since the cat is at home in the dark, it is a highly valuable ally into the world of the supernatural and the unknown. If cat is your power animal, you may have found an excellent assistant in moving through your fears. If cat appears in your life the blending of magic and mystery is close by. Like the cat, you too are independent and a free thinker. At night you probably feel energized. You will stay with a person or situation until you are bored - and then you're off again looking for something more interesting. Cat encourages agility in both body and mind. You will be presented with new ideas and places. The cat gives you clearer perception. You have good organizational skills. The cat teaches us that the physical and spiritual worlds are not separate, but one, and is a good assistant for meditation. A resourceful, strong and fearless spirit guide lending you courage and confidence. Examine the colors, character and behavior of the cat that has entered your life. Everything about it will be mirrored in your own life. The energy field of a cat rotates is a counter-clockwise direction, which is the opposite of a human energy field. Thus, cats have the ability to absorb and neutralize energy that affects humans in a negative way. This is part of the cats healing medicine. If something is affecting you in a negative way, place a cat on your lap or find a cat to pet. Your energy field will be realigned immediately and inner balance will be restored. Cat is a trustworthy teacher, guiding you into the world of self-discovery and transformation.

Cheetah - Symbol of Focus & Accelerating Time
Cheetah's medicine includes - speed and focus, brotherhood, elusiveness, ability to focus intently on something for a short period of time, swiftness, self-esteem, accelerating time, keenness of sight Different to other felines, who stalk, then swiftly jump on their prey for the kill, cheetahs, the fastest animals alive, run down their prey. The lesson to be learned here, the inspiration, is to fulfill our goals with speed and focus. When we feel stuck, cheetah energy can help us spring into motion. If we are moving with great speed but with little direction, cheetah medicine can help us to keep our eyes on our goals, to focus, and to find the most direct way of achieving them. Sometimes we must carefully consider all aspects of a plan to reach a goal. At other times, it may be necessary to be flexible and adaptable in rehashing plans. However, sometimes the most important thing to do is to act with both speed and focus. The goal is almost reached, but continually putting something off, or lack of clarity keeps one from accomplishing it. It is at times like this that cheetah medicine is extremely valuable. There is more wisdom to be taken from the cheetah's actions - there are those who want to accomplish their goals but who may take on too many goals at one time. Though the cheetah is able to reach speeds of up to 63 miles per hour, it can only maintain this incredible speed for a short period of time. Afterwards, it must rest for around 15 minutes. The cheetah period of rest teaches us that intense activity should always be followed by a time of rest, relaxation, and contemplation.

Chinchilla - Symbol of Effective Communication
Chinchillas belong to the rodent family and have big eyes, round ears and a dense, silky smooth coat. Their curiosity is incessant and never ending; they want to discover the smallest corner of their environment and like to sit up high as if to watch the world from above. Once feeling safe in their surroundings they investigate them with an air of innocence and adventure. Sadly because of their lovely coats they are caught, imprisoned and bred by the fur industry. Over 100 chinchillas are used for one coat. Again, sadly, because of the demand of chinchilla fur, it may soon become extinct. With their keen observational skills, the chinchilla knows impulsively when to act or withdraw. This teaches us the importance if timing, if you are a chinchilla person you will intuitively know just when to act and the right course of action to take. However, don’t become over-analytical. Finding the equilibrium between observation skills and an air of innocence is a valuable lesson. Chinchillas are naturally robust with a delicate yet effective digestive system made to get the most out of food. But, as they do not have a vomit mechanism they cannot get rid of bad food. If this is your power animal, take this as a warning that high quality nutrition as well as exercise are a must to maintain optimum health. Difficulty in ridding the body of toxins can be the cause of many health problems. To communicate the chinchilla mainly uses a variety of sounds. Each sound is a specific message - when upset teeth chattering, when nervous a shrill squeal, when distressed a succession of loud cries, when hungry a rasp like growl. They know how to use their voice to communicate, showing us the art of doing so efficiently. The chinchilla is a harbinger, and we should give it due respect and pay attention to the advice it brings. If you decide to listen you will be served well. Though they hold a variety of messages, one thing is for sure - if they come into your life there is bound to be something out of balance that needs correcting right away.

Some questions to ask yourself if chinchilla enters your life:
Do you communicate well with others? Do you need to pay more attention to your health? Do you need to be more clear sighted to elude sticky situations? Do you still marvel at the magic of life? By over analyzing an event do you take the pleasure away from it? Do you use your observational skills to assist you in obtaining your goals?

Cockroach/Beetle/Palmetto Bug - Symbol of Survival
Cockroach teaches the art of adaptability and ultimate survival instincts under any conditions making this creature an emotional and spiritual shapeshifter. He will teach perseverance and tenacity along with going with the flow of events. Cockroach applies determination and fortitude to survive in any event. The wisdom of Cockroach teaches how to keep in touch with the world around you, shows how to strengthen the vitality and the quickness of movement, ability to discern when and how to move, and make use of available resources. Are you looking into the recesses of spirit for Answers? Are you digging enough to find what is hidden? Are you adapting to recent circumstances as well as you could? It is time for cockroach to teach you the art of adapting and finding what is hidden. The Cockroach also teaches us how to use what we have available to us for survival, to clean out the dead and useless aspects of our lives. When the Cockroach appears as a totem, our sensitivity to subtle changes will be magnified. We will have the power to scurry out of danger. People with this totem often find that they had an abbreviated childhood –  a premature movement into adulthood, the necessity to take on early responsibility. Although often seen as a disgusting animal, the Cockroach is actually a gifted teacher in the art of survival and successful adaptability, especially in environment that may seem a bit hostile. Cockroaches are beetles and bring the energy of beetles as well. Beetles aid in transformation, metamorphosis, resurrection and rebirth – rebirth of the soul to a new spiritual ideal and renewed devotion. This animal teaches harmony in the coming changes but utilizing your intuitive abilities and teaches discernment where you need it most. Beetles have a protective quality that will aid in the ability to socialize and communicate effectively by illuminating problems and situations in the correct perspective. Are you eating correctly? Now is the time to examine eating habits. Can you identify which stage of development you are in egg/larva/pupa/adult? Is it time to fly or walk in life? Beetle will teach persistence with charm, trust in the process, proper movement and actions which allows regeneration of your spirit to prosper.

Coyote - Symbol of Wisdom, Family Orientation & Illumination
Coyote's medicine includes understanding that all things are sacred and that yet nothing is sacred, teaching us that only when all masks have fallen will we connect with the source, illumination, stealth, intelligence, singing humans into being, childhood trust in truth, teaching us how to raise our young, they bring rain, give one the ability to laugh at one’s own mistakes, placing the North Star, shape-shifting, teaching balance between risk and safety, trickster, devilment, cunning, wisdom, folly. Among some native tribes, coyote is referred to as the trickster and there are many tales about the coyote. They are known as the great one and the foolish one - they don’t consciously try and trick us, rather they reflect back to us our own capacity for being clever and stupidity. When we are being too serious about life, Coyote may appear to teach us to laugh at ourselves and life’s ironies. Be prepared for your sense of humor to arise in full force in line with what is happening around you and to you. They also remind us that whatever we do to others will be done to us. You get back what you give out… The Coyote teaches how wisdom and folly go together. In others mistakes we see our own foolishness and can learn from their mistakes. The coyote’s energy is linked to simplicity and trust, spurring renewed innocence and a childlike wisdom in the world. Coyote's howl touches your soul, reminding you of your primal connections. People with this power animal adapt easily to new situations. They also usually have close families, especially when children are involved. Coyotes normally mate for life. They reside in the sides of hills or in underground dens where their family is pretty much safe. Coyote people will sometimes go to extremes to protect and nurture family members. Sharp cutting words that hurt another should be avoided. Energy bursts are common if this is your power animal, balanced action is necessary for overall well-being. Coyote medicine people often put other peoples’ needs before their own - remember to give to yourself equally. Although they prefer open grassland and thinly wooded brush, they are able to adapt to almost any environment. This means that they have been able to survive and flourish, growing in numbers - in spite of humans interference who for a long time have been trying to wipe out coyotes by trapping, shooting or poisoning them. Condors and other birds have instead almost become extinct from eating poisoned meat! When hunting prey, the coyotes don’t use speed, but rather they pounce and snap their jaws. If coyote enters your life, you must look at something you have been avoiding. They are mirrors for the lessons we must learn so we are able to walk a good sacred road. The mirror will be held up incessantly until we finally get the picture. Like coyote, we can either work with others to get what we want, or we can dive into a lake to catch a reflection. We can dispel troubles or invite them carelessly. If you are stuck in a rut, call on coyote as an ally for negotiation. Or be grateful that he showed you a trap that you are caught in, or a way that you are fooling yourself. Powerful teachers when it comes to relationships coyotes are, as it is when we are in a relationship that we often fool ourselves the most. Coyote is not out to get us, but to teach us, whether we are willing students or not.

Crow - Symbol of Sacred Law & Change
Many cultures consider crows to be the keepers of the Sacred Law, for nothing escapes their keen sight. To have a Crow as a power animal is extremely powerful stuff. When we meditate on the crow and align with it, we are instilled with the wisdom to know ourselves beyond the limitations of one-dimensional thinking and laws. We are taught to appreciate the many dimensions of both reality and ourselves, and to learn to trust our intuition and personal integrity. Crows often appear in groups, and though there seems to be no variation in their caw-ing to each other, each caw actually has a different meaning. Their complex vocabulary is one sign of their intelligence, and is also a sign of their significance as power animals. When a crow explores something new, others watch closely to see what happens and then learn from it. They often make great noise when hunters are around, warning deer and other birds. Crows recognize potential danger and hence always post lookouts when feeding. This is their most vulnerable time. This helps us understand that we must watch what we believe, to test our habitual ideas about reality against a more universal standard. Without paying careful attention, we are unable to understand the language of crows, this signifies the fact that we can't always see beyond our own cultural limitations. These limitations include certain moral codes of right and wrong, along with 'rules' that accompany these codes. Throughout history there have been many (unnecessary) conflicts and wars between humans due to differing moral and religious beliefs. To truly create a new age of love, peace and harmony it is of high importance for us to be able to transcend our particular cultural limitations and to hold in our hearts and souls what we share as spiritual beings in human form. We are all connected, infinitely and composed of the same 'stuff'. We need to realize that hurting others only hurts ourselves. Crow is the bird which represents this transcendence. Crow can also teach us to be mindful about judging people automatically. Be mindful of your opinions and actions. You need to walk your talk, to speak your truth and to know your life's mission. Again, trust your intuition and personal integrity, to create your own standards, whether or not they match those of the world around you. Be an individual, think for yourself, and don’t necessarily follow the crowd! In the courting process the male crow's voice takes on a singing quality. This lets us see what the basis of sacred law is, unconditional love, the one unfailing principle by which we can test our own principles. Crow is an omen of change. Crows live in the void and have no sense of time, therefore being able to see past, present and future simultaneously. They unite both the light and the dark, both the inner and the outer. Crow is the totem of the Great Spirit and must be held with utmost respected. They are representations of creation and spiritual strength. Crows are messengers, telling us about the creation and magic all around us, that is available to us just for the asking. Look for opportunities to bring into being the magic of life. The striking black color of the crow represents the color of creation. It is the womb out of which the new comes into existence. Black is the color of the night, giving birth to the light of a new day. Crows are sly and can be deceptive in their actions. They have been known to build false nests high in treetops to confuse predators. Their nests are built very high up, giving them the chance to watch everything that is going on around them. As crows are adaptable to all environments and will eat almost anything, they can survive in almost any situation. Crow is surrounded by magic, unseen forces and spiritual strength. If crow enters your life, get out of your familiar nest, look beyond your present range of vision, listen to the message(s) in its caw and act accordingly.

Deer - Symbol of Gentleness, Unconditional Love & Kindness
Deer's medicine includes gentleness in word, thought and touch. The ability to listen, grace and appreciation for the beauty of balance. Understanding of what's necessary for survival, power of gratitude and giving, ability to sacrifice for the higher good, connection to the woodland goddess, alternative paths to a goal. In the Celtic tradition, there are two aspects of deer - female and male. The Hind (the red female deer), called Eilid in the Gaelic language, symbolizes femininity, subtlety and gracefulness. The Hind is believed to call to us from the Faery realm, tempting us to release the material trappings of so-called 'civilization', to go deep into the forest of magic, to explore our own magical and spiritual nature. The topic gentleness is part of this tradition. Many stories tell of Hinds changing into women, often goddesses, to protect does from being hunted. The lesson to be gleaned here is that when we explore magic and spirituality, it must be with good intention, to harm no living being, but to enter the realm of the wild things in the spirit of love and communion. The Stag, "Damh" in the Gaelic tongue, is also linked to the sacredness of the magical forest. The Damh represents independence, purification, and pride. It is known as the King of the Forest, the protector of its creatures. For time immemorial people have sought to identify with the stag by ceremonially wearing antlered headdresses and imitating the deer's leaping grace. Both Celtic and Native American hunters prayed to the deer to give them a good hunt, and in return promised to take no more than was essential for the survival of the tribe. This helps remind us that our spirit of gentleness and unconditional love should extend to all species, not only our own. Maybe the most effective way to summarize the lessons of these beliefs, is to say that only when we move through life in the spirit of love for all beings can we melt the barriers that separate us from others, from other life forms, and from the beautiful mystery which is our own magical and spiritual gift. By observing the ways in which deer behave, it is possible to see what amazing qualities - or powers - they possess. From the deer we can learn that the gift of gentleness and caring can help us overcome and put aside many testing situations. Only love, both for ourselves and for others, helps us understand the true meaning of wholeness. If a deer crosses your path, this may show you that you are a very compassionate, gentle and loving person. If you don't have these qualities, then consider if you have a problem that needs addressing. Are you facing a challenge in your life, whether with a fellow human being or a delicate situation? If you are feeling negative emotions such as anger, try letting go. Think about whether a gentler and more loving approach can sort the issue out. It may be necessary to speak the truth, this is best done with kindness and from the heart, this will generally give a better result. Deer teaches us how powerful it is to be of gentle demeanor, to exert keen observation and sensitivity. Deer's are in tune with nature and all it comprises. They are sacred carriers of peace and show those with this power animal how to open their hearts and love unconditionally. Frequently twins or even triplets are born in the spring. Females and males reside in separate groups until the mating season. White-tailed deer are rather sociable, and family members forage food together along with other family groups, which gives the appearance of a large herd. Fawns are born a color that protects them, camouflaging them from a predator’s sight. In the first few days of their life they hardly move, until their energy field is strong and grounded. They then stand up and begin to follow their mother around. A magical sight to behold is fawns coming out of forests, following their tenderly protective mothers. Even when grazing, the mothers are constantly watchful, fully aware and alert of what is going on all around them. They travel through forest and field with deliberateness and clarity, mindful of the fragile creature they nurture and protect. There is a powerful lesson to be learned here by us. Though we are born with an inborn ability to be unconditionally loving, often we are born to parents whose life experiences have taught them to become hard, and to lose that ability to experience and give unconditional love. Watching the deer and her babies is a reminder to honor and respect the child-like innocence within your self and go about your life with gentleness and an open heart. You should also stand strong on your path, in your beliefs, and not allow yourself to get distracted by outside influences. Deer has entered your life to help you walk the path of love with full consciousness and awareness, to know that love sometimes requires caring and protection, not only in how we love others, but also in how we love ourselves. A deer's senses are very acute and they see extremely well in low light, giving them the ability to understand the deeper symbolic meanings of things. They can hear a twig snap a very long way off. People with this power animal are often described as being swift and alert. They are intuitive, often seeming to possess well developed, even extrasensory perceptions. Sometimes their thoughts seem to race ahead, and they appear not to be listening, to be somewhere else. Anyone with power animal has latent clairvoyant and clairaudient abilities. They can see between the shadows, detect subtle movements and hear that which is not being uttered. Ask the deer to help you develop these true gifts. The set of antlers grown by the male deer are antennae that connect it to higher energies. If you come across a deer in the wild, try to count the number of points on their antlers. This number is associated with numerology and can carry great significance for those with this power animal. Deer teaches us to be gentle, to touch the hearts and minds of wounded beings who are in our lives. Don't push people to change, rather gently nudge them in right direction, with the love that comes from deer. Love and accept people as they are. The balance of true power lays in love and compassion. When a Deer totem enters your world, a new innocence and freshness in about to be awakened. New adventures are just around the corner and there will be an opportunity to express the gentle love that will open new doors for you.

Dog - Symbol of Loyalty, Friendship & Unconditional Love
Throughout history dogs have been known as guardians, protectors and most importantly - MANS BEST FRIEND. Dog was the servant/soldier that guarded the tribe's abodes, protecting them from surprise attacks. His keen sense of smell and acute hearing alerted his master of dangers. He also assisted when hunting and provided warmth in winter. The dogs medicine is loyalty, reliability, nobleness, trustworthiness, unconditional love, friendship, fierce energy of protection and service. People who have Dog as power animal are usually helping others or serving humanity in some way and have a deep understanding and compassion of human shortcomings. Dog serves selflessly, never asking for their service to be praised or anything in return. He is sensitive and intelligent. From him we can learn the true meaning of unconditional love and forgiveness. Domestic dogs are faithful companions to humans with a strong sense to serve. Their ability to love even when abused is incredible. Psychic gifts have been associated with Dog because of his talent to pick up on subtle energy frequencies generally unknown to mankind. Like other animals they can feel for instance if an earthquake is about to occur, and can lead us to safety, if we trust them like they trust us. If the Dog has found you then this may be telling you that you are good at protecting, looking after and helping others. Maybe this is showing you that you are infinitely devoted to those nearest and dearest to you, feeling content serving others and being their when someone close to you needs you. Acts out of kindness and love are far more meaningful to you than material things. There IS a risk of however of people trying to take advantage of you because of your good nature. Dog can be a reminder that you should always be loyal and truthful to yourself too, your own best friend. Love yourself, by having self-respect and self-value you can be of great assistance to those that respect and value what you can give them. On the other hand, this could be telling you that you need to be more like the dog. Ponder this. Do you need to be more loyal and trustworthy to family and friends? Or even to yourself? Study the characteristics of the breed of dog that has come into your life - e.g. is it a hunter, a protector, a companion or playful? Each of these qualities will give you insight into the qualities needed or present in your life. Wolves and coyotes are Dogs descendants/relatives and therefore these should be studied as well. A dogs behavior often mirrors the personality of its owner. If you own a dog, they are constantly observing you and his/her interaction with you. They then anticipate your next move, serving as a mirror image of who you truly are. The dog is a great teacher for those who wish to learn.

Dolphin - Symbol of Breath of Life, Love, Balance & Community
Dolphin teaches us that when we live in tune with the patterns and rhythm of nature, we learn how to truly be in touch with, resonate and communicate with All That IS and how to share this sagacity with anyone interested. There are those that believe Dolphins are more intelligent than humans. Especially when it comes to love. They have large brains, superior intelligence and are often associated in mythical lore with higher forms of consciousness. Some believe they are far more evolved than we are, especially on a spiritual level. Some believe they are alien beings from a different dimension. Dolphins are connected with the power of breath and with emotional release, which are also both deeply connected. One of the most important factors in spiritual growth is to give ourselves the freedom of full experiencing our feelings and emotions. Often negative emotions are suppressed as we don't want to be a part of them, so we try to stay apart from them. Feelings of sadness, pain, anger, grief. We need to stop doing this, as this only lays the foundation for disagreeable outcomes. We need to feel our feelings, by suppressing these feelings; of course they DO NOT go away. They are still there, subconsciously, manifesting blocked energy with-in, and if these blocks aren't removed, this can go on to physical imbalances, with-out. On top of this, by blocking these so called negative feelings, this can result in losing the quality of being able to feel at all, losing much of life's joy. Becoming dead to the world. Simply stated breathing is conversing with the outside world. When people feel that the outside world is a source of pain, they learn, very frequently at a young age, to constrict their breathing. The diaphragm is built to assist us in breathing and to feel deeply, but it becomes suppressed. When we learn to breathe deeply we can learn to feel deeply, in turn letting go of stifled feelings. One way of doing this is to copy the dolphins pattern of breathing, a superb tension reliever!. Dolphin breathes deeply, holds his breath underwater, and then breathes out forcefully. Living in water is an important characteristic of Dolphin, as in many belief systems, including astrology, water is related to feeling and emotion. If Dolphin swims into your life, he is asking you to relish water both physically and mentally, swimming freely and going along with your natural feelings. He is showing you how to enter the waters of life and then with breath and sound call forth what you most need or desire. Dolphins use a variety of whistles, grunts, clicks, and body postures to communicate. They have unique, personal whistles they give out. If they want to get the attention of another Dolphin, they give out their personal whistle. Sound is the creative life force and a big part of dolphins life, therefore this needs to be a part of your life. Communicate. With those around you and All That Is. Creating inner sounds creates outer manifestations. If Dolphin is your power animal, you may do well using your voice for healing or communicating, whether incorporating this into a job or just as a hobby or in day to day life with those nearest and dearest to you… Dolphins have a wise, innocent, purity of being which reaches out to our inner nature. Follow their lead and open yourself to the energy of love, harmony and balance. Express your inner truth, be true to yourself. follow your inner joy. Dolphin is asking you to go back to your roots, to the depths of your being and rediscover the Love that you truly are. Dolphins spend most of their day playing. Their life is lived in joyful harmony with each other and their world. Apparently they have learned the lesson that love is the most important factor in life. If dolphin is your power animal he may be there to teach you how to love yourself and your world more. A big part of Dolphins medicine is living in balanced, harmonious communities. They live in big groups of up to 100. Females will give birth to a single offspring, with several dolphins around her, helping with the birth, pulling the newborn out by its tail. They then protect him or her from any imminent danger. If a dolphin is hurt or ill, other dolphins will tend to them, lifting them to the surface to breathe. Dolphins Wisdom Includes - Knowledge of the sea, change, patron of sailors, harmony, wisdom, balance, Communication skills, freedom, trust, understanding the power of rhythm in your life, use of breath to release intense emotions, water element magic, unselfishness. Dolphin reminds us to get out, play and most importantly, to breathe.

Donkey - Symbol of Intelligence & Dedication
Donkey is symbolic of versatility, intelligence, eager worker, determination, stubbornness, spiritual dedication, undying faith in the creative force, willingness to take on the responsibilities and burdens of others (beast of burden). Donkeys have long been misrepresented and misunderstood by the ignorant masses. First domesticated roughly 4,500 years ago, they were regarded to be a status symbol for their owners. Versatile, eager workers with a kind nature and gentle intelligence donkeys can live for 40 years plus. Donkeys colors range from white, grey to brown. In general they have white muzzles, rings around their eyes and light bellies. Some donkeys have markings on their back that look like a cross. Some have leg stripes. Various tales tell of how the donkey came to get the cross on their back. Some cultures believe the Lord rode the donkey and got the stripes on their legs from walking through the palm branches that were laid in their path as a mark of respect for the responsibility of whom they was carrying. Some tales imply the donkey was sent by God and the Prophet was carried to the heavens on its back. The donkey is an indefatigable worker and personifies the qualities of determination and service to others. They have a deep dedication to the universe/All That Is. Donkeys are willing to take on the responsibilities and burdens of others. If this is your power animal, although helping others is wonderful, taking on more than one can carry with ease can pave the way for physical and emotional problems. Mastering the art of saying no, and being accountable for yourself and your own well being is a life lesson. Not keen on change, donkeys can come across as stubborn. If anything seems dangerous to them - they absolutely won't do it. However, this isn’t because they are stubborn, but because they trust, respect and listen to their own intuitive senses. This is a power animal which can help to put us in touch with nature spirits. Dragonfly is one of nature's shape shifters. The dragonfly inhabits two realms, air and water. The first two years of their life dragonflies live in the water, on the bottom of ponds and streams, and are called nymphs. As they age they go through metamorphosis and take to the air. Eagle - Symbol of Spirit, Vision & Strength
Eagle's medicine includes swiftness, strength, courage, wisdom, keen sight, illumination of Spirit, healing, creation, knowledge of magic, ability to see hidden spiritual truths, rising above the material to see the spiritual, ability to see the overall pattern/big picture, connection to spirit guides and teachers and higher truths, great power and balance, dignity with grace, intuitive and creative spirit, respect for the boundaries of the regions, grace achieved through knowledge and hard work. Us earthbound humans have for time unknown been inspired by the sight of eagles soaring high in the sky. In ancient Greece the eagle was associated with Zeus, who sometimes shape shifted into one so he could hurl his thunderbolts. In some Native American belief systems the eagle symbolizes the Thunderbird, also associated with thunder and lightning. The eagle is a sacred messenger, carrying our prayers on its wings to the Creator/All That Is/Spirit, and returning with gifts and visions for the people. Eagle feathers assist medicine people/shamans in connecting with Spirit for healing. They are deemed the most sacred healing tools, a symbol of power, healing and wisdom. The eagle is also linked to the sun in Gaelic lore, having been called in the Gaelic language Suil-na-Greine, Eye of the Sun. As well as its ties with the powerful energies of the sky, Eagle holds a deeper meaning. From eagle we learn that life looks different from an aerial perspective. We need to take a new view on the challenges in our lives. If we don't readily find solutions it may be because our vision is too limited to see the solutions that are so glaringly obvious. Tying in with this thread of thought, one of the lessons to be learned from eagle is not to depend exclusively on intellectual solutions. Through its connection to the air element, eagle is connected to intelligence, but also to Spirit, the knowing that goes far beyond intellect. Some of Eagles powers are independence, vision and strength. We can see why the eagle has been, and still is, revered. The eagle’s home is the freedom of the sky. He spends most of his time fearlessly flying high above, bridging heaven and earth, scanning below carefully. Their vision is 8 times stronger than humans, enabling them to see prey miles off. Weighing less than a domestic cat, Eagles strength has nothing to do with his size. Their feet and talons are stronger than a human hand, able to soar down with precision grabbing hold of their prey, mid-flight. Eagle’s beak is connected to his jaw and the strongest part of his body. It is designed for breaking and crushing. We are reminded to pay attention to our speech and how it affects others. What we say and tone of our voice should be examined. We mainly use our jaws for speaking. The lesson here is to control what we say, how much and when. Uncontrolled talk makes it easy to hurt someone verbally, to break or crush them with your words. The vision they possess helps us learn to take a step back and view the bigger picture. We need to view the past and the present objectively, whilst looking towards the future. We need to open our minds and hearts to see past old, restricting beliefs that are holding us back. Eagle teaches us to courageously face our fear of the unknown, so we are then able to fly as high as our heart's joy can take us. Your strengths need to be utilized wisely and remember, to soar like Eagle you must view things with caution, being confident and trusting your abilities. Eagle is also linked with courage. To give up our limited perspectives, to release ourselves from comfortable, familiar thought patterns, even when they don't appear to be working, and fly into a larger world requires that we are brave enough to enter unknown realms. This is further emphasized by Native American and Celtic tales, of shamans and druids who shape shifted into eagles. Mental and emotional shape shifting is sometimes necessary if we want to grow and learn. As with all things there are risks involved in allowing our beings to assume new forms, however the rewards are greater. Eagle asks us to recognize that the earth is not our only home, as well for us to join it in the flight to our true home - the world of Spirit. Eagles are majestic and bear a powerful presence. They can be social birds, but they do need isolation from human intrusion to breed in the wild. If a human comes to close or touches their nest, they are very likely to abandon it. Both the male and female eagles incubate the eggs and share the duties of raising their young. The eagle is an incredibly patient being, often perching in a tree, holding the same position for hours on end. Those with this power animal are shown how to master the art of patience in every area of their life. For within the energy of patience all things are possible. Eagle teaches us how to go through life without becoming attached to anything, how to accept what comes our way and see everything as a gift from the universe. With their acute hearing they hunt as much by ear as by sight. If eagle soars into your life, the ability to hear spiritually and psychically will awaken. Eagle reminds us to communicate with All That Is on a daily basis, so the gifts offered you can be utilized fully. Keeping this up removes judgments from our consciousness. When we cease to judge, we speak with encouragement and kindness towards others. Lessons that are linked with judgment are part of this medicine and sure to be coming your way. If Eagle is your power animal, you feel the need to have an involvement with creation, a willingness to experience extremes, a willingness to use your abilities, a willingness to seek out your true emotions. You must become much more than you ever imagined would be possible. Eagle symbolizes a state of being that is reached through inner work, understanding and passing the initiation tests that come about from reclaiming our personal power. Eagle is the gift of clear vision with which one can truly see, to live in balance with heaven and Earth. Eagle shows you how to look above so you are able to touch Grandfather Sun with your heart, to love the Shadow as much as the Light. You are being asked to give yourself permission to be free in order to reach the joy that your heart longs for.

Elephant - Symbol of Commitment, Royalty & Strength
Elephant's medicine includes strength, royalty, connection to ancient wisdom, removal of obstacles and barriers, confidence, patience, using education opportunities, commitment, gentleness, communicating in relationships, discernment, intelligence, and compassion. If this is your animal guide, these virtues are a part of your natural character. By applying them in your life soul evolution is accomplished. Throughout history elephants have been revered. They are most intelligent creatures, and honored by many cultures. As well as being the largest land animals, they are also among the longest lived, with life spans of 60+ years. In Buddhist tradition, the Buddha picked the form of a white elephant as one of his many incarnations, thus the rare appearance of a white elephant is still heralded as a manifestation of the gods. The Hindu god Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, has the head of an elephant. Elephants can teach us that gentleness, commitment, and communication in relationships is very powerful and necessary to keep relationships alive, trusting and loving, whether it be friends, family or partner. Deeply committed to all creatures with whom they have relationships, elephants are tough when protecting others and gentle when nurturing them. The matriarch (the oldest, most experienced female leader of a herd) leads in a way that is both gentle and inclusive. Elephants are able to communicate telepathically. This can teach us how to truly listen to others. Elephants are so similar, yet so different to our own species. We have so much to learn from them! Elephants have emotions that are comparable to human - love, joy, jealousy, rage. Just like humans, young elephants are dependent on their mums, until they reach adulthood. The general lifespan of an elephant also closely parallels that of humans. When a baby is born, the entire community gathers around the mother and newborn and rumble with joy. This is equivalent to tears rolling down their faces. Just like human babies, elephants learn about getting along in the physical environment. For instance, elephant calves have to learn the many ways in which their trunks can be used. The newborn elephant is born into a community of love. Calves have more than one mother so to speak, as all are willing, eager teachers, from the matriarch, to her offspring and their young. They want to nurture, protect and help the youngest among them develop. They also teach first time mothers how to develop their own nurturing skills. Loyal and affectionate elephants would risk their lives for the sake of others in a family group. Wild elephants have been known to grieve and even shed tears when a family member has passed away. Elephants have amazing memories and when mistreated they often seek revenge. Elephants show us that by supporting and loving one another, our own ability to thrive in the physical world is enhanced. We learn from them to pass on the gift of nurturing we received in our early years, be it from our biological family or others who helped us grow into who we are now. We must honor the elders of our community and nurture the young. Like the elephant, we need to help ease the transitions of those who are going into adulthood with gentle love, wisdom, patience and compassion. By having open hearts and minds, we can create strong relationships within the community, therefore building a strong community. Elephants communicate telepathically with herd members as well as other elephants. As we choose to become closer and more open with those dear to us, our ability to understand them can deepen to a level that transcends speech. Having an elephant totem gives you ancient wisdom and power to draw upon. They are the embodiment of strength and power. People with this power animal often have a very strong sex drive. Through using fragrances and incense, elephant can take you to new energies and power. Generally speaking elephant people are very affectionate toward family, caring for the young and the elderly. They also usually have an inborn knowledge about plants and roots. Elephants give us insights into the power of the three feminine energies - child, mother and old wise woman. Although elephants weigh A LOT, they walk almost noiselessly, with exceptionally graceful and rhythmic striding. Their hearing, smell, touch and taste is very keen/sensitive. This makes up for their poor eyesight. In relation to their big heads, their eyes are very small and can only turn slightly from side to side. This results in restricted side vision. Those with this power animal feel things deeply and respond to those feelings from a place of inner knowing. Because their vision is limited they tend to look straight ahead and can’t always see what going on around them. Learning to shift our focus to view the whole is helpful. Elephants have just 4 teeth, all molars, 2 toward the front of the mouth and 2 toward the back. When the front ones wear down, they drop out and the 2 at the back come forward. Then 2 new molars grow in the back of the mouth to replace those that have moved forward. The back molars are able to be replaced 6 times throughout their life. When the last set wear out, they can no longer chew and die of starvation. Teeth are very symbolic, and are considered receivers and transmitters of energy linked by connecting paths throughout the astral body. As the elephant is extremely intelligent, those with this power animal would make excellent researchers and alternative scientists. Elephant tusks point backwards. They use them as weapons and for digging edible roots. From a spiritual point of view this hints at an ability to uncover the hidden memories and bring them to the fore for evaluation and healing. Let go.

Possessing tremendous stamina, elks are able to run for a very long time. They are powerful with strong reflexes, responding speedily to anything that appears on their path. Elk live in big herds and are rarely seen alone. They enjoy the company of their own kind, but they do need their own space. Elk don't graze during night time. If a herd is attacked they will scatter to the four winds to confuse a predator. The art of survival is part of the elks teachings. If cornered they can turn pretty dangerous. Adult bulls with a full set of antlers are a match for any animal that tries to cross them, including a bear. People with this power animal need a sacred space to go to now and again in order to keep their energy balanced. Like deer, elks have competitions to see who will mate with the does. However, unlike the deer, elk will fight very aggressively and often draw blood or worse. If you have Elk medicine, and possess aggressive tendencies, you must learn to keep these under control and look for fairness in all you do. Your aggressive tendencies may not be visible to your conscious mind, but when you are provoked or feel threatened/cornered these tendencies surface unexpectedly. The majestic elk deserves, no, demands respect. Beholding a full-grown elk, with its winter coat, standing tall and looking fierce is a true wonder. Elk shares its regal demeanor with us; if this is your power animal you most probably often find yourselves on center stage both in your personal and professional life. Generally people with this power animal have past life associations connected to royalty. If Elk medicine is fully developed within a person a strong self-image is expressed. Elk may also be telling you to work on the way you conduct yourself, and to carry yourself with pride and power. This doesn't mean you should be egotistical, for elk knows that its true power comes from the universe/all that is. It uses the gifts it has been given, using them to its advantage. Another aspect of elks’ power is strength and empowerment. If you need to be impressive in a situation, you can draw on elks’ power. If you are shy or unsure, elk can aid you to become more confident.

Foxes are seen as power animals / totems throughout the world. The Chinese believed foxes could take human form. In Egypt the fox brought favor from the gods. There was a fox god in Peru. Foxes aid the dead get to the next life in Persia. The Cherokees, Hopi and various other Native American Indian tribes believed in its healing power, the Apache credited the fox with giving man fire. Fox is among the most uniquely skilled and ingenious animals of nature. Being a night creature, fox is often imbued with supernatural powers. Foxes are usually seen at dawn and dusk. Dusk starts off their day, and the dawn is its ending. This is the time, when the world of magic and our everyday realities cross paths. Foxes live on the edges of forests and open lands, the border areas. As fox is an animal of the between times and places, it can be a guide into the faerie realm. Fox has a long past of magic and cunning associated with it. It can move in and out of circumstance restoring order or causing confusion, depending on the occasion. There are various species of fox, but they all share the extreme cleverness and cunning that paved the way for the expression, "sly as a fox." Fox urges us to develop the art of camouflage, invisibility, and shape shifting. They are agile, skilled, and unpredictable. Fox's power lies in not being able to outrun the hounds, but to know in advance when they will be out hunting. They then use their ability to camouflage. When we learn to detach from our surroundings and to use all our senses to be observant, we will also be able to anticipate and create the future. A fox being followed by hounds will run across the tops of walls, cross streams diagonally, double back on its trail, run in circles - in short, do anything to break the trail of its scent. Fox has the amazing ability to outwit both predators and prey. Fox shows us how to slip out of unpleasant situations quietly and unnoticed. Those with fox as a spirit guide are frequently smart and witty but must remember to keep their crafty and clever demeanour balanced or it could backfire. Fox can also show you that your actions may be too obvious and the need to learn to be more discreet. Fox is a wise, potent, teacher for those who choose to live conscious and deliberate lives. Due to their ability to blend into their surroundings, foxes are generally viewed as sly and cunning beings. Calling someone foxy is not always paying them a compliment, it can also mean that they are tricksters or liars. Interestingly, the word cunning, originates in the Old English word, kenning, which means to know, especially as applied to seeing something which isn't visible straight away. This can be related to the fox's superb sight and their ability to anticipate. Fox can show us the skills necessary when it comes to handling people. The ability to camouflage can be deduced as being able to take a step back and view an interpersonal situation with detachment. This includes opening up the less obvious senses, such as intuition. Often the underlying basis of a situation may seem obvious, but instead of making a quick judgment, listen closely to the outer and inner senses. Then you may perhaps get a completely different picture of what is going on. When the outer situation and the inner senses don't match it is wise to handle like a Fox, to trust ones intuition/instinct/inner voice, and to lay low. Just like the wolf, the fox partner's for life, and is very devoted to its young. Many of its clever hunting techniques are keyed to acquire food for the helpless young and the nursing vixen. This is am important element of the fox’s power. Similarly, our own awareness, and flexibility can be used to greater ends, not just to serve ourselves. Fox's Wisdom Includes: Shape shifting, cleverness, observational skills, cunning, stealth, camouflage, feminine, courage, invisibility, ability to observe unseen, persistence, gentleness, swiftness, wisdom, reliable friend, magic, shape shifting, invisibility. Fox can teach us to control our auras so we are more able to live in harmony with the world and others. If fox is your power animal, learning to be invisible is very important in your life. With practice and patience you will be able to go unnoticed even at a party or in a crowd. Fox also teaches good eating habits, as they eat small portions frequently. You have probably heard the suggestion that this is better for our health. If fox is your power animal, pay attention to the way it moves and follow its lead. This is a powerful guide to have and those that have it to should learn to use its skills for the benefit of all, including themselves.

Frog - Symbol of Healing, Cleansing & Rebirth
Frog's medicine includes - a reminder of common bonds with all life, singer of songs that celebrate the most ancient watery beginnings, transformation, cleansing, understanding emotions, rebirth, healing, water energy. Frogs are amphibians, spending their early life nurtured in water and once they emerge onto dry land as frogs. They are never far from a water source. The frog is recognized as a healer in North and South American Native customs, as well as Celtic traditions. Frog is believed to bring rain when needed. Water cleanses and gives the earth renewed freshness. Similarly frog's medicine can wash away any negative physical and mental energies which deny us a balanced and peaceful life. Perhaps when we have allowed emotional toxins to thwart our outlook on life, or if we feel swamped. They also helps to nourish our own innate ability to heal ourselves on all levels. The notion of renewal is frequently linked with water, representing the unblocking and smooth flow of energy for healing. Due to the fact that frogs are found in water and on land, they hold the magic of both. Mud is a combination of earth and water, and is used in healing therapies to rid the body of toxins. Those with frog medicine are extremely sensitive, and the use of mud baths is advised. The deepest healing will always take place, and be fulfilled on the emotional level. Emotions are linked with water, especially tears. Some of us, especially men, are brought up to believe that crying is something to be ashamed of, that you are weak, wimpy or childish if you cry. When we deprive ourselves of this powerful form of emotional release, we bottle it all up and this can cause us to eventually reach unbelievable lows in our lives. Energies become blocked. With the frog’s assistance, we can begin to realize, and experience, tears as being natural and as necessary as rain. There are few species of frog who actually care for their offspring. After mating they abandon the eggs. Because of this, lessons to do with survival are common in people with frog. Scientists believe that the frog population’s health reflects the health of the entire eco-system (as a whole). Frog is strongly linked with transformation and magic. Generally frogs undergo a two stage life cycle. They start off as eggs, hatching into tadpoles, limbless aquatic larva with gills and a long flat tail. Legs and lungs develop, and the tail gradually disappears as the tadpole approaches the adult stage. This denotes the awakening of ones creativity. When frog enters your life, it is an invitation to leap into your creative power. In order to do this, it is helpful to know which stage of life you are presently at. By studying the frog’s characteristics you will discover this. This is yet another reminder to us that life is about evolution, a miracle of change and transformation. This message is strongly represented in the story of the ‘Frog Prince’. Im sure most of you are familiar with it. I certainly grew up with this story! It is similar to the story of the ugly duckling. In one version of the story, a queen was ill and could only be healed by drinking from the well of true water. Her 3 daughters tried to get the water, but each time a hideous frog refused them access unless they agreed to marry him. Alas, the youngest daughter agreed her mother was healed. To her delight she discovered that her hideous groom transformed into a gorgeous prince. This teaches us that in order to heal ourselves and others, it is often required to face that part of us that we have hidden from ourselves, because we find it unacceptable or ugly. When we can honestly look all aspects of ourselves in the face and accept them, we will find that the ugliness is washed away. Our true beauty shines, like the sun after healing rain. Frogs are to be found worldwide. Their bodies were created for jumping and their sharp eyes help them catch prey, mostly insects. As a frogs eyes protrude from the sides of their heads, they have almost 360 degree vision, providing them with excellent depth perception. Frogs also have a highly developed sense of hearing. Behind each eye is to be found a large disked membrane, an external eardrum that picks up sound waves and transmits them to the inner ear and then to the brain. Combined with their extraordinary sight, this gives them clairsentient and clairvoyant abilities. The way in which frogs produce sound is similar to the way humans do, by forcing air from the lungs over the vocal cords. They possess a variety of complex calls from ribbets to croaks, connecting this with language. If this is your power animal, you have the potential to take command of the spoken word. Often frog people are bilingual. Frog symbolizes coming into your personal power, reminding you not to become bogged down with day-to-day living. If frog is your power animal, you give support and energy where it is needed, and can cleanse the negativity from an environment.

Gazelle - Symbol of Awareness, Speed & Grace
The Gazelle's wisdom includes awareness, speed, grace and agility, beauty, ability to maneuver, vertical movement. Gazelles are members of the antelope family and are top of the menu for big cats. Therefore they are vulnerable meaning they must constantly be extremely alert to in their surroundings. Their main predator is the cheetah. Though gazelles are capable of reaching high speeds, cheetahs are able to run faster. They like sneaking up on their prey and then making a dash for it. Hence, the gazelle has the ability to zig-zag swiftly from side to side, often outwitting the cheetah and putting themselves out of the cheetah's straight line run of attack. They are most likely to be caught when stopping to see if the cheetah is still following them. Similarly, those who try and escape depression, fear, negative emotions and habits of the past by resorting to food, alcohol, or other forms of addictive behavior, often find themselves stopped in their tracks, with the negative emotions they try to avoid at their throats. This can lead to a blockage in the throat chakra and cause ill health in relation to this area. There is a lack of communication with oneself or others to overcome here. From the gazelle we can learn that with awareness and skill, we can be at ease with our own vulnerability. The ability to discover and explore new paths and to change direction when required is the best way to free ourselves and to prevent ourselves from being consumed by the hungry beasts of the past, lurking in the shadows of our minds. Reclaim your energy, don’t waste it on futile thoughts or efforts. Put all your energy into a positive way of living and thinking. This ability also ties in with the gazelle's vulnerability. When we step onto an unknown path we feel vulnerable. Gazelle shows us that with awareness and skill we can be comfortable discovering and exploring the unknown. Life is an adventure. Grasp it with both hands and a heart filled with anticipation and eagerness.

Giraffe - Symbol of Grounded Vision & Farsightedness
Giraffe's medicine includes seeing far into the future, ability to reach things that are unreachable to others, communication, intuition, ability to remain above the fray. The giraffe is the tallest of all animals, growing up to 18 feet high, with neck's as long as 7 feet. Though giraffes may seem to some to lack grace because of their long limbs, their weight is well distributed, and they are only vulnerable when bending down to drink water. However, similar to the camel, giraffes are able to go for long periods of time without drinking (up to a month). Giraffe helps us see our lives in a way that is both grounded and expansive and that in our longing to evolve spiritually, we must always remember we are physical creatures, no different to any other living being. Their long necks offer protection by enabling it to see very far. The powerful body helps protect it and its young. Tough they cannot hold them off, with a well-aimed kick they can kill a lion. The giraffe’s strong body represents being grounded in physical existence and its ability to see symbolizes spiritual vision. Consequently we are taught to view our lives in a way that is both grounded and expansive. If we study the many forms of earth's creatures in depth, we may find ourselves becoming ever deeply appreciative of nature's imagination and design. In the animal kingdom alone, when we ponder on the differences between horse, cats, big cats, wild cats, dogs, wolfs, wild dogs, elephants, dolphins, kangaroos etc. we can see just how many creative possibilities life holds. It can be even more awe-inspiring to discover how each form has been created for a particular purpose. We can once again see how connected EVERYTHING is. The whole universe is one. Not just our planet. The whole cosmos is one living, ever expanding creation. Giraffe helps us explain the expression 'to stick one's neck out.' When we take risks by going further than we ever imagined possible, we see find worlds of possibility. The giraffe's vulnerability when lowering its head to drink is a reminder to us that if we lose sight of our greater vision and consciousness and sink into a mundane way of life, we risk losing our spiritual connection. People who have Giraffe as power animals often know what will happen in the future. They have clairvoyant abilities. Giraffe people should be very careful when talking - be sure not to say too much to the wrong person, or in the other hand, too little. Do not let other's words have an effect on you. Giraffe’s legs are firmly planted on the earth, but their heads are in the sky, serving as a link between the higher and lower worlds. Their flexible necks let them see what is behind, next to and in front of them. This gives them the ability to know the future and understand the past, whilst moving with the present moment. We are taught how to increase our perceptions by viewing life from all angles. When we look up, sideways, forwards, and down, the past, present and future is made known. This symbolizes balance and the capability to progress. Never become complacent and lose sight of the future, yet don't live in the future, live in the now. Life could become ever more difficult until you set your sights once more on the path ahead. Giraffe can bring clear sight and can be a powerful ally to you. If Giraffe is your power animal, then just like giraffe you will have very strong bonds with family and friends, especially parent and children. Giraffes need only 2-4 hours of sleep a day. When sleeping they will kneel down with their neck and head wrapped around them, resting it in the crock of their leg. Some legends suggest that the sleeping habits of the giraffe is linked to ancient Eastern cultures. They are amazingly flexibility allow them to take on positions similar to Yoga therapies, where the body is contorted (but not uncomfortably) whilst in a meditative state. Coupled with its kneeling sleep position made many believe that it was actually praying instead of sleeping! Upon awakening the giraffe stood up and its great height would invoke feelings from fear to respect. Many cultures honored the giraffe, the Egyptians art for one, featured giraffes. Because the distance between the head and the heart is far, the giraffe’s vascular system has valves so sufficient blood gets to the brain. The elastic blood vessels in the head and neck take care of changes in blood pressure due to head swings. Blood pressure fluctuations and circulatory conditions may be found in those with this medicine. If this is the case, proper care is advised. What we think and feel on a heart level needs to line up in order for giraffes gifts to benefit us. Giraffes are very quiet, laid back, docile animals making little noise except for the odd bleat. If this is your power animal, this brings you the wisdom, and power, of silence. Words often take our focus away from silent reflection. Learning to balance speech with silence, peace and tranquility is very important. As giraffes communicate through body language, if this is your power animal you would benefit from some type of movement classes, such as Yoga or Pilates. Although the head of the giraffe seems dainty, it has 3 horns giving it the ability to deal a nasty blow. One of its horns is a bit obscured, hidden under the skin just above its eyes. This location is similar to that of the third eye in man and reminds us to honor our visionary abilities. A wonderful power animal to have in one’s life, the giraffe is a bearer of many gifts.

Goat - Symbol of Being Surefooted, Independence & Abundance
Goat's medicine includes abundance, independence, being surefooted, eliminating guilty feelings, understanding nature energies and beings, seeking new heights, agility. There are many different breeds of goat which can be roughly grouped - Swiss goats; the eastern, or Nubian, with long, drooping ears; the wool goat, Angora. Generally it is a simple matter to tell a sheep apart from a goat. However, there are certain hair breeds of goats that can only be told apart by the direction of the tail - upward in goats, downward in sheep. Domesticated goats appeared in the East, during prehistoric times it is believed by some. They were used as a source of milk, cheese, meat and mohair. The skin has been used a source for leather. In Europe, China and North America, goats are mainly used for milk production. In the Mediterranean countries, especially Spain, Greece, Italy and south of France, goat meat is eaten a lot. The Cashmere and Angora breeds are renowned for their fine wool or mohair. Most of you will be aware that the goat is linked with the astrological sign of Capricorn. If this is your power animal, it would be beneficial for you to study the traits of this sign for a deeper understanding of yourselves. As the goat shows up prestigiously in Greek mythology, this can indicate that you have a past life associated with Greece. Studying Greek mythology may be useful for you. The goat shows us how to compose a firm foundation on which to stand and aids us in developing confidence as we head towards new. Goat teaches us how to create a solid foundation on which to stand and helps us develop confidence as we move towards new heights achievements. The mountain goat is well known for its surefooted steps on high rocky ledges, with its excellent climbing abilities due to its highly flexible skeleton. When the mountain goat shows up in one’s life, one should carefully observe their current foundation and ensure it is helping them appropriately. It can also mean you must let go of the ‘security of your insecurity’, basically the routines and beliefs that you are comfortable with and which stop you from trying new things. Try new things that are relevant to your growth, and maybe even exceeds it. Goat’s medicine includes the energy of abundant nourishment. From them we can learn how to sustain ourselves, we are reminded that we must build up our independence and strength. They show us how to take care of our basic needs and teach us how to perfect survival skills. Goats are attuned to nature’s energies and are therefore able to move strategically through difficult terrain and go where other animals cannot. If this is your power animal, it serves as a guide into the unexplored aspects of one’s true self.

Goose/Canada Goose - Symbol of Sacred Circle
Geese symbolize the sacred circle, cooperation, communication, dedication, knowing when to lead or follow. Geese have long been revered - it was a sacred bird in the Roman temples of Juno, it was associated with the North Wind in Greek Mythology and is the totem for the Winter Solstice for the Native Americans. The time when Canada geese migrate announces the passages of the Great Circle of the Year, reminding us of the sanctity of the cycles of our lives. There are lessons to be learned from this bird’s compliant and communal demeanor - they don't ever leave behind an ill or wounded fellow bird. They are very compassionate, caring and loving selfless creatures. We are able to see that this attitude is very natural behavior. They also know when to lead or when to follow - members of a flock alternate these roles. This teaches us that when we are balanced and in harmony with our personal rhythms we will also know when to lead and when to follow. We are taught the values of leadership not being about an exclusive privilege or a burden but a shared opportunity. This power animal reflects a stimulation of childhood thrills and the belief in stories and legends. The stories we loved and were drawn to as children often reflect our life mission. Think about the stories that affected you the most and see what you got out them and took into your adult life. Not only does the goose also help when communication verbally, it an especially useful ally when it comes to the written word. The Goose is also a symbol of fertility and fidelity. People with this power animal often have the deep-rooted belief that there is just one special person out there for them. Geese are vegetarians, and therefore if you are a goose person should always have plenty of organic fruit and vegetables in your diet.

Grasshopper/Locust - Symbol of Leaping Forward
Grasshoppers/Locusts medicine includes jumping across space and time, astral travel, new leaps forward/leaps of faith/jumping without knowing where you will land, leaping over obstacles, ability to change careers quickly. There are 10,000 or so species of grasshopper, they are cold blooded as all insects are and are more mobile when it is warmer. Each species have their own unique song. However, only the males are able to sing with a few exceptions - the males sing to compete for female attention. The power of sound and song is part of grasshopper’s medicine. It is an ancient method to use song to alter ones consciousness and communicate with animals and spirits. There are some Native American songs that date back 20,000 years. If grasshopper has leapt into your life, maybe you need to recognize where you come from, to go back to your roots and to honor your ancestors. Grasshopper is the Chinese symbol of good luck and abundance. Anyone with this power animal has been given the ability to take chances - to act on a whim and jump right in. For them things may not progress step by step as they do for other people progress - but rather extremely fast. When taking that leap simply trust your own instincts on when to make the leaps. Listening to your inner voice and responding to it will lead you to positive outcomes. Don’t be afraid to make that leap, remembering all the while that Grasshopper’s only ever jump forwards and never backwards! The short horned grasshopper is related to the locust, and the grasshopper locust is linked to astral travel, being able to leap to another reality where the real enigmas of life are. If the grasshopper-locust leaps into your life, then you are being asked to take a leap of faith, to do something without fear - this will generally be something that you have avoided doing and is often linked to a change in direction on a grander scale - be it a relationship, career or change in self. You will have the wisdom needed to get passed obstacles in an efficient manner. Generally outcomes will be favorable. Grasshoppers are usually peaceful, however in times of overcrowding or food shortages, they turn into the much feared locusts that in the blink of an eye can strip a farm or forest. They turn almost black so as to take in more sunlight which fuels their swarming by giving extra heat and energy. They do this until they find somewhere with enough food, enough of them die/are killed to control the population. Remember: the fruits of the earth are for all to enjoy and there is plenty for all if used in a sacred way. People sometimes forget this sacred balance and take more than needed - this may also be an indication of people taking from you. Do others claim too much of your time and energy? Do they try and make you take responsibility for their actions? Ask yourself these questions, remembering that the going only gets tough when we refuse change.

Hawk -  Messenger, Discernment, Intuition, Observation, Wisdom, Courage & Truth
The hawk's gifts include clear sightedness, being observant, long distance memory, messages from the universe, guardianship, recalling past lives, courage, wisdom, illumination, seeing the bigger picture, creativity, truth, experience, wise use of opportunities, overcoming problems, magic, focus. Hawk is associated with the number 14, with the tarot card Temperance. The Temperance card represents the teaching of higher expressions of psychic ability and vision. The Hawk represents a messenger in the Native American culture. It often shows up in our life when we need to pay attention to the subtle messages found around us, and from those we come into contact with. As with all messages received, it is important to recognize the messages underlying truth. We will be taught to be observant and also pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we aren't using, a gift or unexpected help for which we haven't shown our gratitude for, or a message from the Universe. As there are so many hawk varieties, the messages vary and can affect all levels of our psyche. Hawks are the protectors and visionaries of the Air. They hold the key to higher levels of consciousness. This power animal enables us to awakens vision and inspires a creative life purpose. Having Hawk as power animal means your life will be filled with responsibility, because Hawk people seek the overall view. You will most probably be aware of omens and spirit messages. A Red tailed Hawk is special. It will ALWAYS be with you, for life. It has direct ties to the Kundalini, the seat of primal life force. It is linked to the base chakra. If you have this power animal, you need to be aware of and work toward fulfilling your soul's destiny. It reflects far greater intensity of energy within your life: physically, emotionally and mentally. Spiritual forces will be felt strong within you. One trait all hawks share, is the ability to move between the seen and unseen realms gracefully, joining both worlds together. Their acute vision attributes this ability, their discriminating nature keeps them out of dangers path. Hawks have a broad vision, allowing them to see what the future holds. In man this is a symbol of prophetic insight. If this gift is underdeveloped, it is common for people with this power animal to have a tendency of over analyzing everything. When this is so, clear vision is lost. You must learn to keep your analytical mind under control, not allowing it to run wild. Hawk posses many hunting skills. The most common, when pursuing prey, is to swiftly follow the prey's efforts to get away. Once the prey is caught in the hawks mighty talons, it is then dismembered with their sharply pointed, powerful beak. For us, this may indicate that we may be able to run, but not hide from our destiny. For, eventually it will catch up with us. The destiny of man is to awaken from their spiritual amnesia and to realign with the original intention of their soul. When the hawk gets a hold of us in his powerful talons, we will be asked to evaluate who we have become and to shatter our self created illusions. This will help our inner truth to come out into the open and for it to shine. Hawk denotes union with All That Is. The hawk is a bird of the heavens, arranging the changes necessary to prompt our spiritual growth. Having this power animal can be bitter sweet. When accepting its presence in your life, you will be asked to surrender/give up anything that doesn't honor the integrity of all life. Whether its an idea, feeling or action. Although hard work is involved, the rewards to be reaped are great, far outweighing this.

Heron/Egret - Symbol of Balance
Herons enjoy their own company and are loners. It is rare to see them flocking together. People with this power animal are independent and open to change whenever necessary. They often follow non-traditional roles and don’t feel the need to keep up with the Jones’. They don’t require or desire many people in their lives, which can be a bit of a hindrance in personal relationships, especially if the other person is always needy of attention. So as not to become a total loner, some social interaction is good. Herons know how to take advantage of things and events for their own benefit. Using the heron as an example and studying their actions and non-actions shows us how to perfect our personal flight through life. Once this is mastered then you will know how to take advantage of things and event that most people wouldn't bother with. You know what is best for you, and you should follow that path. Be persistent when opportunities present themselves, don't let them get away from you. The heron and egret have a strong connection to the Earth element and those with this power animal must be aware and cultivate this connection. Mother Earth is a source of strength and will help you stand firm and strong. It is important for someone with this power animal to learn to stand on their own two feet, to become independent and self-reliant. This bird offers the gift of balance, allowing you to perform many tasks at the same time, keeping all in balance. If one way doesn't work, then another way will, heron and egret people instinctively seem to know this. Meditation on color will provide insight. Herons enjoy their own company and are loners. Hippopotamus - Symbol of Emotional Depths & Lucid Dreaming
The Hippos wisdom includes power, emotional depth, creation, imagination, healing, proper use of aggression, ability to move gracefully through emotions, protection of family, mother-fury when needed, birth of new ideas, lucid dreaming, spirit contact.
The hippopotamus is sacred in both Egyptian and African traditions. Its name means ‘Water Horse’, and it spends nearly all day in the water, and when not in water obviously on land. This is the ancient realm of birth, power, creation, imagination, and healing. Hippos are the second largest mammal on earth. This strong mammal can help guide us in grounding ourselves so we can face and break down negative emotional issues - the power of water, they are a link to the spiritual, artistic and healing realms of water. The hippopotamus blends the elements of earth and water, and teaches us how to synthesize the attributes of both into our daily lives. Water is linked to intuitive knowing, and earth to practicality and stability. If this is your power animal, you are being asked to act upon your intuition without examining it, and to keep up a practical, balanced, grounded life style. Traditionally, water represents birth, the emotions, creativity and healing. Hippo’s advocate the creative, flowing aspects of water. Therefore they are related to the creative energies of the second chakra, which are connected to the flow of blood. Hippos can submerge themselves in water for up to 5 minutes without taking a breath. This shows us that we can safely submerge ourselves in emotions or the creative process. Hippos are amphibious and have special features to adapt to the water - their eyes and nostrils are high up on their heads, they can stay almost completely submerged and still be wise to what is going on above water. This shows us that we can participate in emotional depths without losing our perspective. They can also hear and breathe and still be almost completely covered in water. When you have fully developed these abilities, you will have an innate ability to know what lies beneath the surface of any situation. You will see and speak truth and demand that others respect that truth If this is your power animal, your higher sensibilities will be awakened, activating lucid dreaming and spirit contact. You will be shown how to be adept in these. Learning to control powerful creative energies is the lesson taught you by the Hippo. Hippo’s require water that is deep enough to cover them as their skin is delicate and thin, making it susceptible to overheating. If this is your power animal, you too may be susceptible to sun related problems including dehydration, so be careful when outdoors. Though the Hippo is extremely nimble and flexible in its movement, they are often predisposed to develop set patterns. When leaving the water at dusk, they like to take the same path, creating a rut in the ground several feet deep. This shows us to find the path that is best suited to us, and to stay on it to reach our true destination.

Horse/Pony/Mustang - Symbol of True Power, Love, Loyalty, Freedom & Mobility
The Horse turns up in near enough all mythology - whether in writing, folklore or reality. For example the eight legged horse of the Norse god Odin, Pegasus with the wings, Unicorns, the stallions of the Hindu sun god, the stallions of Apollo. A lot of legends depict Horse as being psychic and able to sense humans with magical powers. There is no other animal that has given man the freedom of mobility like the horse. Celtic tradition holds the horse goddess as having power over life - the cycle of birth - death - afterlife - and rebirth. Therefore having horse medicine provides the means to mentally prepare us with all these stages. Doing so helps us discover true spiritual power - that we are immortal souls using the body as a vehicle temporarily. In the Celtic tradition Horse is also associated with the power of the land itself. When the horse came into native peoples lives and was domesticated the distance of journeys was shortened, travel and hunting was made easier. The horse enabled Natives to move their villages quickly, carrying them and their belongings to new territory and the challenges awaiting them there. They were given a new found freedom. Horses helped turn Native tribes into the powerful mounted warriors and nomads they became, although taming the horse wasn't easy, as their spirit for freedom was a fire burning within them. The People were able to discover places further afield, and not just stay close to home. Also, visiting far away clans strengthened communication and relationships. Therefore, horse is connected to sincere, meaningful relationships and valuing what our spiritual paths hold for us. This influences Native Americans customs to view Horse as the symbol of True Power, which comes when opening up to others with compassion and love, sharing their gifts with their communities. Power is an energy which can be used on many levels. It is our servant and should not be used in a negative fashion, abused, wasted or kept to ourselves. By sharing our power with others and showing them how to develop their power and make it flourish, speeds up our journey and makes it more joyful. At the ego level power may be used for personal gain, with complete disregard of others needs. At worst it may be used at the cost of others. As there are misuses of power to be seen and found all around us, those on the spiritual path frequently have negative emotions toward it. But being powerless is not the answer here. One must learn to use power correctly. This is an important lesson to learn and horse is a powerful teacher. If Horse enters your life, you will probably feel a power within you that is sometimes hard to control, a bit wild and fiery! You probably love to travel. People with Horse as power animal are fiercely independent and have little tolerance for anything or anyone that limits their free expression. They give us the safety of speed and the promise of adventure. Horse symbolizes the wind, loyalty, devotion, unconditional love, friendship and companionship. Horse has faith in his master. His medicine includes power, stamina, endurance, loyalty, freedom of mobility, control of the environment, awareness of power achieved with true compliance, inter-species communication, expanding one's own latent abilities, friendship and cooperation, astral travel, guardian of travelers, warns of possible danger, guide to overcoming obstacles. He is also your warrior spirit, giving safety in your physical and metaphysical journeys. If a wild or domestic horse has 'galloped' into your life ask yourself whether you are feeling constricted? Do you need to move on? Do you need to allow others to move on? Are you pushing boundaries that may have unpleasant consequences? Carefully consider the course your actions may lead to. You are being presented with a gift of safe movement. Do you need to get somewhere physical or spiritual? Horse will assist you. Are you afraid of a situation in your life? Horse helps awaken your inner power and bravery to get through it. If Horse is your power animal, you are a teacher to your family, partner and friends demonstrating how to be strong within themselves. Those who pick a relationship with a 'horse' person, feel a desire for self empowerment. They are searching for the horse and the power it possesses. Rather than the horse searching for them. Horse is there to teach us how to ride into new directions, to awaken and discover our own freedom and power.

Hummingbird - Messenger of Joy
Hummingbirds gifts include the ability to heal by using light as a laser from mouth, endurance over long journeys, ability to fly into small places to heal, joy, happiness, love, timelessness, The hummingbird brings special messages for us. It is a teacher of joy, and their lessons are many. Hummingbird is the smallest of all birds. It is the only creature able to stop dead in its tracks whilst travelling at full speed. It is also unique in that it is able to fly backward and sideways, and can also hover, go forward, up or down. The hummingbird also possesses an unusual hovering pattern, and is able to move its wings in a figure of eight pattern, a symbol for infinity. This holds a message for us - often we find ourselves stuck in time, regretting or longing for the past, or hoping that the future will bring better things, building castles in the sky. We are shown how to view the past and then let go, rather than be continuously caught up in it, we learn how to appreciate that the past creates are future, and that even at the time some lessons were harsh and hurtful ones, we wouldn't be who we are without these lessons today. We need the past to create the future, but mustn't dwell in it, yet we may reflect on it bur not in a bitter cant-let-go manner. If we become the observer of our lives by moving back a step, our lives will be viewed differently. Hummingbird teaches us to go beyond time and to see that what happened in the past and what may happen in the future is not nearly as important as what is occurring now. Remember to hover in the moment, and to appreciate its sweetness. Drink deeply of the nectar of life. As well as living off small insects, the hummingbird lives on nectar and it is always searching for the sweetness of life. With its long tongue it is able to get past the often tough and bitter outer layer only to discover the sweetness below. Flowers and plants love the hummingbird - as it sucks the nectar from the flower it pollinates. Because of this, many cultures link the hummingbird to the healing properties of flowers and herbs. In many traditions, hummingbird feathers have been revered for their almost magical qualities. It is said that the hummingbird brings love as no other medicine can, and its presence brings joy to the observer. The vibrating hum of this birds wings and their lightness seem to symbolize the subtle energetic healing which essences can provide. Their physical lightness is a powerful reminder for us to lighten up. When weighed down with worries, our spirits cannot soar. The hummingbird further deepens this message with its rainbow-iridescent feathers which have caused some species to be named after precious stones, such as the ruby-throated species. People with this power animal, adapt easily to whatever situation they come into, and make the most of their new circumstances. Also, they could never become addicted to any artificial stimulants, for they find joy in their own heart, and are happy and find even more joy in spreading joy, love and beauty to all around them. They also have the ability of taking their inner joy into new and different surroundings. They have a knack for seeing the good in people, and aren't put off by a gruff or hard front, as they know that below this surface goodness and beauty reside. They may also be naturals at working with flowers, perhaps growing them to share with others, or using flower essences for healing such as aromatherapy. If this is your guide, you have high energy and a spirit that must be free. If you become caged, restricted, your wonderful, free, loving energy suffers great depressions and feelings of uselessness.

Jaguar - Symbol of Solitary Path, Reclaiming Power, Shape shifting & Psychic Vision
The Jaguar's medicine includes seeing the roads within chaos and understanding the patterns of chaos, moving without fear in the darkness, moving in unknown places, shape shifting, psychic vision, facilitating soul work, empowering oneself, reclaiming power. The Black Jaguar's medicine includes the same as jaguar but in addition keeper of the circular time continuum, gatekeeper to the unknowable. The South American name for jaguar, 'jaguara' is translated as 'carnivore that overcomes prey with a single bound.' there is an Indian legend that says the jaguar came by its beautiful spotted coat by dabbing mud on its body with its paws. These spots easily hold the jaguar apart from other big cats. What also holds them apart from other big cats is the fact that they are unrivaled. There are no other predators that can compete with this powerful cat. Those with this power animal generally make brilliant leaders and diplomats. According to Mayan beliefs, the journey of the sun across the sky and the darkness of night represented the infinite journey of human consciousness and its transformations. The midday sun's position was compared to the Eagle, flying high in the sky, to then plunge below the horizon, just as we plunge into the dark to face our spiritual challenges and to be transformed. The hidden sun was said to be Jaguar, whose spotted skin represents the stars glittering/shining in the night sky. Hence it was called the "Jaguar Sun." Jaguar is the earth father, holding the authority over the sacred power of and in the earth, and the animals who live upon it. The force that lives within the mountains, giving them their volcanic and trans-formative power, is the same underworld source of energy and power contained within the Jaguar Sun. The Mayan word for Jaguar is IX and it is pronounced 'eesh'. Similarly to the tiger, this solitary hunter stalks silently and patiently, to then strike with lightning speed. This symbolizes the importance of knowing when it's best to take the solitary path in stalking one's own dreams. For the native people of the rainforests, everything contains the essence of the Jaguar. Jaguar, Leopards and Panthers are very ancient and powerful power animals/totems. They embody aggressiveness and power, but without the influence of solar energy. Black Panther's power is lunar (moon). People with a Jaguar, Panther or Leopard medicine have the ability to multi-task. They tend to be loners and are very comfortable with themselves. Often they are drawn to other solitary people. If this is your power animal, you must learn to pace your work - in all aspects of your life - and not push too hard. Women who have Jaguar, Panther or Leopard totems often bring their children up alone, whether it be through divorce or just circumstances in their lives. Either sex holding this power animal have the potential to develop clairaudience, the ability to hear communications from other forms of life or dimensions and should trust their thoughts and inner visions as they are based in reality. Jaguars have huge paws and a broad head with mighty strong jaws. They often kill their victim by piercing the skull with one rapid bite. The jaguar growls, snarls and makes deep grunts - it does not roar like a lion. People with this power animal generally possess a good command of language, although their words can have a tendency to cut, tear and shred others apart. Learning correct communication skills is of foremost importance for these people. The jaguar's powerful body is capable of taking them hundreds of miles in the search for food. They are agile climbers. They teach us how to fulfil goals/dreams through pliability and steadfastness. Jaguars are at home in the dark with their excellent night vision. They move fearlessly, whether night or day, teaching us how to trust our personal instincts. Latent psychic sight may be stirred in those with this power animal. The jaguars preferred habitat is usually swamp and wooded regions, although they are also able to live in scrub-lands and deserts. Jaguars live in caves and canyons close to fresh water. In mythology caves are linked with retreat and isolation, a place to go to aid soul work. Water is linked with the emotional body of humans. When the jaguar bounds into your reality it is asking you to go within, to release your fears, to heal your emotions and to awaken your inner sight. When you come out of retreat the jaguar will be there awaiting you. If you choose to follow his lead, he will guide you into the underworld where the secrets of life and creation are to be found.
